چکیده

We provide an overview on recent results investigating the role of land-atmosphere coupling, and in particular of soil moisture-temperature coupling, for summer climate variability and climate change in Europe. Increasing greenhouse gas concentrations are expected to enhance the interannual variability of summer climate in Europe and other mid-latitude regions, potentially causing more frequent heatwaves. In a recent study (Seneviratne et al. 2006, Nature), we explore the underlying mechanisms using regional climate simulations of recent and future climatic conditions with and without land-atmosphere interactions. Our results indicate that the increase in summer temperature variability predicted in central and eastern Europe is mainly due to feedbacks between the land surface and the atmosphere. Furthermore, they suggest that land-atmosphere interactions increase climate variability in this region because climatic regimes in Europe shift northwards in response to increasing greenhouse gas concentrations, creating a new transitional climate zone with strong land-atmosphere coupling in central and eastern Europe. These findings emphasize the importance of soil moisture-temperature feedbacks in influencing summer climate variability and the potential migration of climate zones with strong land-atmosphere coupling as a consequence of global warming. This highlights the crucial role of land-atmosphere interactions in future climate change, and opens new perspectives for the investigation of their role on the European continent. Finally, additional results from a few more recent experiments will be discussed.

Quantification of Land-Atmosphere Coupling and Implications for Drought Persistence In Observations and Model Simulations of 20th Century Climate and 21st Century Climate Change

Of all recurring natural disasters, long-term drought is one of the most devastating and costly due to large spatial extent and often long duration. The mechanisms responsible for the maintenance of long-term droughts are not well understood, however many drought analyses allege the importance of land-atmosphere feedbacks and speculate that these feedbacks will amplify changes in the hydrologic...

Contribution of land-atmosphere coupling to recent European summer heat waves

[1] Most of the recent European summer heat waves have been preceded by a pronounced spring precipitation deficit. The lack of precipitation and the associated depletion of soil moisture result in reduced latent cooling and thereby amplify the summer temperature extremes. In order to quantify the contribution of land-atmosphere interactions, we conduct regional climate simulations with and with...

Impact of Atmospheric Variability on Soil Moisture-Precipitation Coupling

It is now well-established that the chaotic nature of the atmosphere severely limits the predictability of weather, while the slowly varying sea surface temperature (SST) and land surface states can enhance the predictability of atmospheric variations through surfaceatmosphere interactions or by providing a boundary condition (e.g., Shukla 1993, 1998; Shukla et al. 2000; Graham et al. 1994; Kos...

Linking Ground Hydrology to Ecosystems and Carbon Cycle in a Climate Model

The paper discusses land surface processes in a climate model, linking the roles of hydrology, ecosystems, and carbon cycling. The integrating factor is the movement of water and carbon dioxide through the stomates of leaves. This molecular gas transfer is a major control of coupling between land and the atmosphere, as required for modeling climate variability and change, land storage of carbon...

Coupled atmospheric and land surface dynamics over southeast Australia: a review, analysis and identification of future research priorities

The southeastern Australian climate and climate variability is driven primarily by large-scale climate dynamics. How these dynamics translate into local effects is influenced by the nature of the landscape, the vegetation, soil moisture, fire, snow, irrigation and orography. This local land-atmosphere coupling can enhance or moderate the large-scale dynamics and have significant influences loca...
